My Arrival Story

These days it seems everyone around this lonely Dip has been selecting sweet names for their exciting travel blogs. Even Diplomats at home have started their own to keep in touch with those abroad. Feeling left out of all the fun (and to keep in touch with all of you), I have decided to start my own.

So, to begin with my arrival story:

Last Monday afternoon, I loaded up my little, putty-colored Honda Accord with everything I'd need for the coming semester and began my arduous journey to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, USA. The weather was surprisingly nice. I'd heard reports of snow the week before! I quickly settled in and met my new neighbor. His name is Chad and seems nice enough. After dinner, I spent some time with other members of my hall. I will be living in dormitory-style housing, but I do have single to myself!

The past week has been a whirlwind of classes and errand running. My classes seem pretty standard for Biology majors. I'm taking BioStatistics, an intro physics course, a genomic analysis course, and something called Plain People Modern Medicine given by three guys who work with the local Amish population. (I'm hoping to go see some of the "Amish Country" for myself in the coming weeks.) I've heard there may even be an Amish student on campus!

Other than that I've been keeping busy with some clubs and making new friends. My sister came to visit and to help me get settled already. She really enjoyed it here and wishes she could come back. My initial impression of this experience has been positive. The food seems to be agreeing with my stomach and I'm relieved everyone (so far!) has spoken some English. The showers are hot, the drinking water is clean, and while crime does seem to be a minor problem (as in ALL major tourist areas), I haven't personally witnessed anything.

Alright, I should probably get going. I don't have class today, but I've been asked to TA a lab! I'll upload my pictures when I get a chance.

Love from Lancaster~
